Comment to Lead Blog (Ashly)

I had never heard of the show “Impractical Jokers” until now; however, the concept of the show does sound quite funny. I definitely agree with Ashly that superiority theory is one of the best explanations for the humor behind the show. The clip that Ashly included where one of the jokers had to get a guys number to enter him in a “gift card giveaway” while the other jokers used that number to send the guy completely random and absurd text messages was hilarious. What made this clip really funny was how the unknowing guy who was being pranked totally went along with all the texts. He responded to quite a few of the bizarre text messages and ultimately decided to quit responded when they called him a “fool.” Superiority theory is a contributing factor to the development of humor in two different aspects of this clip. I first noticed how the jokers must have felt superior. They were superior to the one other jokester that they were pretending to be as they texted the ra...

Lead Blog (Baywatch)

The 2017 version of Baywatch has become one of my favorite movies ever. It incorporates an element of each theory into many of the scenes throughout the movie. However, I would argue that benign violation is definitely the most prominent element used to develop humor throughout this movie. Baywatch is best known for its use of inappropriate humor and its sexualization of the men and women who star as characters in the movie. In my opinion, the actors and actresses that played in the new version of Baywatch did an excellent job of recognizing the sexual tone of the movie and finding ways to make fun of it. I think this movie did an excellent job of using incongruity theory and being ridiculous and nonsensical while still maintaining an interesting plot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnL9uQ6rgmE             This video has two of my absolute favorite scenes from the entire movie. In each of these scenes ...

Comment to Lead Blog (Hill)

While I have never seen any of the Hangover movies, I feel like I know exactly what Hill is talking about based off of the clips he included. The use of incongruity theory and superiority theory is evident in all of the scenes from the four videos I watched. I agree with the argument that the use of incongruity theory and superiority theory is what aided the success of the Hangover movies. By integrating both theories into many of the scenes, these movies were able to reach a broader audience, which explains the large fan base that the Hangover series has acquired. Using two different theories allows for a greater likelihood of more people finding humor within each scene. Examples of this mesh of theories can be seen throughout the entire Hangover series. The entire plot of the movie is based on these completely absurd and ridiculous situations that we, as an audience, know would never happen. Additionally, the way that the characters react in these situations is so ...

Comment to Lead Blog (Kyndal)

Although I have never seen We’re the Millers , I remember how funny it looked when I first saw the trailer. The movie clip Kyndal included had numerous scenes that were quite funny. I liked that she used four specific examples from the video clip and described what made each scene funny. Additionally, I liked that she related each one of the scenes to a different theory of humor. By using many different examples, Kyndal was able to depict the wide range of humor used in the movie. I believe that part of what made We’re the Millers so successful was the fact that they were able to have a strong presence of each theory of humor; which allowed for a wider audience to find humor in this movie. The incongruity theory was most evident throughout the movie, because of the movie’s bizarre plot. The implausible idea of random people coming together to form a fake family to successfully smuggle drugs across the border in the form of a family vacation is so absurd that many pe...

Comment to Lead Blog (Trace)

I don’t normally watch SNL, but I did find the example that Trace used to be quite funny. One of the things that I found very funny about this skit was how Charles Barkley and Alex Rodriquez seemed to be answering the questions seriously and honestly while D.C. Timmons was clearly making things up and providing completely absurd answers to the questions being asked. This aspect of the skit really added to the incongruity that was being created as the skit continued to develop. In my opinion, the use of incongruity theory throughout this skit is what truly made it funny. The absurdity of what D.C. Timmons was saying seemed to be elevated by the fact that he was saying all of these crazy things in a setting that is meant to be serious and professional. Additionally, I loved seeing how Alex Rodriguez, Charles Barkley, and the person interviewing them reacted to the nonsensical responses that D.C. Timmons gave, especially towards the end of the skit. It was funny to see ...
