Comment to Lead Blog (Alyssa)


            Alyssa’s post was funny to me because I was able to read her reactions and comments towards twelve of the most iconic and quotable vines. What I loved the most about reading Alyssa’s blog post was the fact that I was able to determine what vine she was referring to based off of what she wrote about each one of them. Another factor that made reading her post so enjoyable was how she included some of her own humor and wit in her responses towards each of the vines. For example, in the eleventh vine reference that she uses she writes part of her response so that it will have the same sort of dialect as the person in the vine clip. By doing this she is continuing and adding to humor of the video clip because of how she chose to mock the guy speaking in the vine. In addition to adding to the humor Alyssa was able to go deeper and analyze some of the vine references she used so that the reader would have a better understanding of why we happen to find some vines exceptionally funny. She does this analysis very well in the first two examples she uses in her blog post. For these two vine references she provides some background knowledge to the popular horror movie It and the game system Wii. In the It vine reference she explains that the clip is funny because of how Pennywise adapts his lure from a childlike item to a more adult lure of penis enlargement pills. Whereas, in the Wii vine reference it is funny simply because it reminds us of the popular Wii bowling game that we all enjoyed playing as kids.

    Do you think the background knowledge helps to make it funnier? It seems that often the humor in this kind of a situation comes from reliving or experiencing again something shared. There has to be an aspect of familiarity to some degree.

    I found that reading her post quickly turned into a game as I tried to guess which vine was in the link. I almost wish that there was some way to see what percentage of my knowledge and memories are taken up by Vines and song lyrics. It would probably be a much higher percentage than I would be proud to admit. In some way, it adds to the level of humor we find in Vines because we can share these memories and nostalgic feelings with almost anyone our age.

    I agree with you that vines not only are hilarious, they also bring up nostalgic childhood memories and games, like the wii and wii sports. I remember when my sisters and I first got a wii and we would constantly play tennis, bowling, and mariokart. Watching the vine of a little girl rolling like a bowling ball is funny because not only is it strange, but it makes me remember how I used to play wii bowling and would always get frustrated and have so much fun with my family.

I don’t normally watch SNL, but I did find the example that Trace used to be quite funny. One of the things that I found very funny about this skit was how Charles Barkley and Alex Rodriquez seemed to be answering the questions seriously and honestly while D.C. Timmons was clearly making things up and providing completely absurd answers to the questions being asked. This aspect of the skit really added to the incongruity that was being created as the skit continued to develop. In my opinion, the use of incongruity theory throughout this skit is what truly made it funny. The absurdity of what D.C. Timmons was saying seemed to be elevated by the fact that he was saying all of these crazy things in a setting that is meant to be serious and professional. Additionally, I loved seeing how Alex Rodriguez, Charles Barkley, and the person interviewing them reacted to the nonsensical responses that D.C. Timmons gave, especially towards the end of the skit. I don’t think that I have ever seen Sacha Baron Cohen’s videos in particular, but I have seen videos that are similar to his style of comedy. In the videos that I have seen of people disguising themselves and asking strangers questions they have never been able to keep a straight face. Sacha Baron Cohen’s ability to keep a straight face while he is asking these people ridiculous questions and convincing them to do very inappropriate things makes his videos much funnier than other people’s attempts at this type of comedy. Additionally, I believe that based off the examples that Will gave Sacha Baron Cohen is able to make the interviews more comedic because of caliber that he is able to achieve in his videos. He is able to interview people who are very famous and well known in their profession, which makes the interviews even funnier because Sacha Baron Cohen manages to get very respectable people flustered and confused. Comment to Lead Blog (Kyndal)

Although I have never seen We’re the Millers , I remember how funny it looked when I first saw the trailer. The movie clip Kyndal included had numerous scenes that were quite funny. I liked that she used four specific examples from the video clip and described what made each scene funny. Additionally, I liked that she related each one of the scenes to a different theory of humor. By using many different examples, Kyndal was able to depict the wide range of humor used in the movie. I believe that part of what made We’re the Millers so successful was the fact that they were able to have a strong presence of each theory of humor; which allowed for a wider audience to find humor in this movie.
