Comment to Lead Blog (Trace)
I don’t normally watch SNL, but I did find the example that
Trace used to be quite funny. One of the things that I found very funny about
this skit was how Charles Barkley and Alex Rodriquez seemed to be answering the
questions seriously and honestly while D.C. Timmons was clearly making things
up and providing completely absurd answers to the questions being asked. This
aspect of the skit really added to the incongruity that was being created as
the skit continued to develop. In my opinion, the use of incongruity theory
throughout this skit is what truly made it funny. The absurdity of what D.C.
Timmons was saying seemed to be elevated by the fact that he was saying all of
these crazy things in a setting that is meant to be serious and professional.
Additionally, I loved seeing how Alex Rodriguez, Charles Barkley, and the
person interviewing them reacted to the nonsensical responses that D.C. Timmons
gave, especially towards the end of the skit. It was funny to see how Alex
Rodriguez and Charles Barkley responded to the things that D.C. Timmons said
because you could tell that they were completely taken aback by the way D.C.
Timmons was responding to many of the questions. It was in this section of the
skit that the incongruity theory could be seen most clearly. As the skit
progresses the things that D.C. Timmons says becomes increasingly absurd until
at the end everything he is saying is totally random. Lastly, I think Trace
makes a really good point by saying that this skit draws attention and
awareness to a very serious issue. This issue being the brain damage and its
effects that many football players suffer from. They also briefly mention the
differences between the three sports in how seriously they handle injuries. Of
course this conversation came to the conclusion that most injuries are not
taken very seriously in football. The joking manner that they discuss these
topics suggests the use of relief theory.
I completely agree with you that the absurdity of everything D.C. was saying caused the jokes to be super funny. SNL highlighting a serious topic through the skit was really interesting because I haven't really seen any other SNL videos that are bringing major issues to light that aren't political.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the use of relief theory in the article. They definitely are able to take a serious topic it and add a bit of humor to it to make it less awkward to bring up.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point that it both uses relief theory to allow us to talk about something serious, and to show how that issues is not taken seriously.
