Comment to Lead Blog (Kyndal)
Although I have never seen We’re the Millers, I remember how funny it looked when I first saw
the trailer. The movie clip Kyndal included had numerous scenes that were quite
funny. I liked that she used four specific examples from the video clip and
described what made each scene funny. Additionally, I liked that she related
each one of the scenes to a different theory of humor. By using many different
examples, Kyndal was able to depict the wide range of humor used in the movie.
I believe that part of what made We’re
the Millers so successful was the fact that they were able to have a strong
presence of each theory of humor; which allowed for a wider audience to find
humor in this movie. The incongruity theory was most evident throughout the
movie, because of the movie’s bizarre plot. The implausible idea of random
people coming together to form a fake family to successfully smuggle drugs
across the border in the form of a family vacation is so absurd that many
people cannot help but laugh. The superiority theory was another key factor in We’re the Millers in that it added to
the overall humor. The characters in the movie are seen as unintelligent, and
they often attempted to solve situations in a totally nonsensical way, which
makes the audience laugh, because as logical thinkers, we know that what they
are doing is not going to help at all. Many of the characters say or do things
that are completely out of place and inappropriate, making the audience laugh
at their lack of awareness to what their saying. The relief theory is not as
heavily used in this movie; however, it is still incorporated in many of the
scenes. Overall, I think the movie uses the theories of humor very strategically
that makes it enjoyable for almost all viewers.
I agree that using all three theories allows the movie to apply to a larger audience. Comedies that are able to do this efficiently and effectively tend to be more successful.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that some of what makes this movie so funny is just the central absurdity of the plot. It really seems to tie everything together and the theories cooperate. I did think relief theory was present in the first scene in a large way but I also can see just looking at it through incongruity theory.
